Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.

One snub was enough. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to realize that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and player rankings essential with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Personal talent counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when celebrity prevails. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach mention appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“No issue exists with him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. You need a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone need to support him and create a setting which he can use this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of love and guidance. He has not played for the national team since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s game in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match versus the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him onside but he will be watching him closely. Leave self-importance outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
