In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
